I have a confession to make.

Being a Windows software developer, I’m quite frankly a little ashamed.

After months of prodding and begging, I finally broke down and bought my wife a iMac.

I put it off as long as I could, but finally her pleading got the best of me, and we drove over to CompUSA and got it.

I’m sure you know the one I mean… it’s the one featured in those “Hi, I’m a Mac… and I’m a PC” ads (which are quite funny, to be honest…)

I must admit, I had an ulterior motive, however. I know computers - been working on them, with them (and for them?) all my life. Every time my wife would have a problem with her PC, she’d come running to me to help her.

“Didn’t I explain how to fix this last week?” I’d ask.

“Yeah, but why do I need to remember how to fix it when I have you?” she’d retort.

I’ve been my wife’s own personal tech support guy for too long.

Now, since I know absolutely NOTHING about Macs, I figured that if I got her the iMac she’s been begging for, she wouldn’t be able to come to me for free tech support anymore :)

I agreed to help her set it up, but from that point on she was on her own. If she had a problem, she’d have to figure it out herself.

So, I open the box, and there’s a monitor, and a keyboard, and a mouse. I plug them all in - no problem there.

We turn it on.

It asks her for her information to create an account for her.

Then, all on its own, it detects our wireless network, and automatically configures itself. It connects to the internet and looks for required updates for its Mac OS-X.

After a mere 5 minutes, the whole shebang is up and running flawlessly. No manual configuration. No researching online what certain settings should be. No trying to troubleshoot incompatibilities between the motherboard and the video card.

In short, it just works.

Open the box, plug it in, and turn it on.

I like that.

And my ulterior motive has backfired on me. As agreed, she hasn’t bugged me to fix stuff and figure things out for her… but not because she agreed not to.

She hasn’t asked me for help with anything because there haven’t been any problems with the iMac.

Imagine that - a computer that just works. No wonder Mac fans are so in love with their computers.

So, I’m thinking… if I had my OWN iMac, I could do some really cool video stuff and put it on my blog. Heck, I could turn marcquarles.com into a VLOG! And Podcasting? Don’t even get me started…

Anyways, I have to run. My wife just went to the store, and I don’t have much time. I’ve gotta play with the iMac some more :)
